Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma
Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma - is a rare form of cancer. It is medically termed as peritoneal mesothelioma. It occurs when the mesothelium tissue, which surrounds and protects all vital organs in the abdomen area, is affected. Abdominal mesothelioma occurs in the abdominal cavity. In US around 300 to 500 people are diagnosed with asbestos mesothelioma every year.
The abdominal asbestos mesothelioma cancer is triggered by asbestos exposure. The time lag between the periods of exposure to the actual inception of the terminal illness can take more than 20 to 25 years. Medical experts are divided in their opinion about the real cause of mesothelioma. While some agree that asbestos is the real culprit, others beg to differ. There have been many mesothelioma cases of late, wherein people with no prior exposure to asbestos in any way have been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer.
Asbestos is a mineral formation that is used in building and construction work. It is mainly used as a fire retardant. Since ancient times, asbestos has been acknowledged as a hazardous component. This mineral actually became very popular in the 60s, when asbestos was used to provide safety against fire threats. Soon, builders started using them in their construction and mining works.
Health insurance companies refused to cover the workers insurance policy who worked in asbestos atmosphere. Even builders, construction companies, mining industries and so on were aware of the possible risk factor involving asbestos. But these chose to ignore it, in order to protect their selfish interests.
Shipyard workers and construction workers suffered the greatest risk from asbestos exposure. Even today asbestos products are widely used. Company heads who are concerned for the safety of their workers take precautions such as providing them with masks and gloves. The use of asbestos products is done under strict regulations.
The occupational Safety and Health Administration has formulated several clauses and rules that favors employees working under such risky atmosphere. Employers are required to provide necessary safety gadgets to workers and give them employment in an environment, which is relatively free from hazard factors that could cause fatal health issues.
Asbestos fibers enter the body through aerial way. They either inhale polluted air or ingest it along with food particles. When these particles reach the peritoneal cavity, it causes the mesothelium cells to function abnormally. The cells produce excessive slick fluids and slowly begin to divide in an uncontrolled fashion.
Once the disease takes proper and total control of the mesothelium cells, it starts to behave rather aggressively. If not detected in the initial stages, mesothelioma cells start to metastasize and quickly spread to other body parts.
The symptoms of abdominal asbestos mesothelioma are not very unique or pronounced. A normal physician may find it very difficult to diagnose a mesothelioma case. The common symptoms like chest pain, cough, tiredness, and a breathless feeling can be confused with other common diseases like flu, cold or viral cough. If such symptoms persist, it is always better to see a doctor and share your work history with the physician to help him diagnose your medical case.
