What is Asbestos?

One of its first uses was as a coating for candlewicks. When a candlewick was coated with asbestos material, the wick was able to burn for longer than any other material.

Due to this simple purpose, asbestos was developed and manufactured in the 20th century as the "perfect" insulator for such items as steam pipes, heat ducts, roofing material, flooring, etc.

During the second half of the 20th century, federal agencies started to notice the increase of cancer and death caused by exposure to asbestos containing building materials.

It turned out that asbestos fiber, which has a fish hook shape, cannot easily be processed out of the body. For this reason, the asbestos fibers would attach themselves to the linings of the lungs and/or get carried by the blood stream to different organs, both of which can cause cancer.

The first diagnosis of asbestosis was made in 1924. The patient was a young woman who had been working with asbestos since she was a young thirteen. The young woman died when she was only thirty-three years old.

The cause of death was determined to be "asbestosis", as declared by an English doctor. This caused a study to be performed on asbestos workers in England. Many, about 25% of the workers, had shown evidence of asbestos-related lung diseases.

In 1931, laws were passed to increase ventilation and to make asbestosis an excusable work-related disease. The United States did not take any related steps until ten years later.

This can relieve some pain in the chest wall, and can also help prevent the recurrence of pleural efllusions. There are several possible complications, but when the disease recurs, it is more often local recurrence before distant metastasis.Palliative radiation therapy – Radiation therapy can help reduce pain and pleural effusion.Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy can also be used to provide some relief from symptoms, particularly in combination.Intracavitary therapy – Used in advanced cases of mesothelioma, the use of chemotherapy agents locally in the pleural space or the peritoneum has produced some transient reduction in the size of the tumors and the buildup of fluid, according to some small-scale studies.


If distant metastasis has occurred (Stage IV), pain management and home care become more important.Treatment of recurrent malignant mesothelioma:Treatment for mesothelioma when it has recurred tends to be centered on methods that were not tried the first time around. Intravenous chemotherapy does not provide very effective treatment for PM, much like the pleural variety, but because the disease stays in the peritoneal cavity for most of the course of the illness, localized chemotherapy can be a good alternative.
